Section – II (Short Answer Questions)
Q4: Explain the steps of the light-dependent reaction in the mechanism of photosynthesis.
Answer:
The light-dependent reaction, also known as the light reaction, takes place in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast. The key steps include:
(i)Absorption of Light Energy – Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, exciting electrons.
(ii)Water Splitting (Photolysis) – Light energy splits water molecules into oxygen, protons (H⁺), and electrons (e⁻). Oxygen is released as a byproduct.
(iii)Electron Transport Chain (ETC) – Excited electrons move through proteins, helping to produce ATP and NADPH.
(iv)ATP and NADPH Formation – The energy from electrons is used to form ATP (energy) and NADPH (reducing power), which are used in the Calvin cycle (light-independent reaction).
Q5: Write any four non-renewable resources you have observed in your surroundings and write their uses.
Answer:
(i)Coal – Used for electricity generation and in industries.

(ii) What is the difference in the number of chromosomes of a parent cell when compared to daughter cells?
Answer:
The parent cell is diploid (2n), while the daughter cells are haploid (n), meaning the chromosome number is halved after meiosis.
(iii) In which cells of the body does the above cell division take place?
Answer:
Meiosis occurs in reproductive cells (gametes), such as sperm cells in males and egg cells in females.
(iv) How many daughter cells are formed in the above cell division from a single parent cell?
